Frank Miller's RONIN

Now this one was quite a shocker. I went into it with no preconceived notion of what it was other than what the name of the graphic novel suggested, that it was about a ronin (disgraced samurai).
The art work didn't quite draw me in. I'm sorry but it's true. I have come to realize that Frank Miller's independent work is an acquired taste. Sin City was easier to follow, graphically.. perhaps because of the simplicity that was kept in the black and white. It was also better organised.
The colouring and the drawing did not quite match for me. It actually felt quite like i was going blind..... Like I couldn't see what the hell was being shown in the panels. Too many lines. Then I got used to it. But still, the story wasn't getting me excited. His hero wasn't looking like a winner.
Then something happened half way into the book. I had no idea when I was sucked in and my mind had wrapped itself around what i have later been informed is Miller's twisted route into cyberpunk.
Anyhoo. I did not see the ending coming. Considering that I have been brought up on hindi films and horrendous serials where ANYTHING can happen, I failed to see the ending. Who knows, maybe I'm going senile at the ripe old age of  25 or its about 5 in the morning, but I am here to pass a judgement upon this graphic novel, a retraction of the old one made in my head earlier into the book, and say thoroughly, it is brilliant.
Another naivete broken from this one is that you dont have to make likable characters in order to have a successful story. Its logical, now that i come to think of it, but I had never considered this. Somewhere in my cotton candy infested mind I had the conviction that characters had to be likable to drive a story. Shame on me.
